Farmer Health recipe selection policy

Our aim is to help farmers stay fit and healthy. That’s why we want to build up a collection of healthy recipes. That’s also why we apply the ‘is it healthy?’ test to the recipes you submit to the site.

Your recipe and the ‘is it healthy?’ test

  • If your recipe meets our guidelines, it will be checked and published on www.farmerhealth.org.au. We may make some minor alterations to make it easier to follow or healthier.
  • If we really can’t find a way to make it healthy, it might go into our ‘special occasions’ section – or we might email you and ask you for another one!

Easy, tasty and fun

We want healthy eating to be enjoyable, because we know it is fun to eat a healthy diet. Our recipes aim to:

  • Promote variety – it’s important to eat a range of different foods.
  • Use healthy cooking methods – grilling and baking instead of deep-frying, steaming instead of boiling.
  • Taste great – we’ll do our best, but we’ll let you be the final judge, so please rate them and tell everyone what you think!
  • Be easy to prepare – We want recipes that everyone can prepare and enjoy

How we select our recipes

Our recipe selection policies are based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines. These guidelines suggest that we should:

  • Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods
  • Eat plenty of legumes, vegetables and fruits
  • Eat plenty of cereals, preferably wholegrain
  • Eat lean meat, fish and poultry or alternatives
  • Include milk, yoghurt, cheeses or alternatives
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Limit saturated fat and moderate total fat intake
  • Choose foods low in salt
  • Limit alcohol intake (if you choose to drink)
  • Consume only moderate amounts of sugar and foods containing sugar

We’re flexible

We’ll look at all the recipes and assess their merits. We might, for example, include a recipe that’s a bit high in fat because it has lots of calcium.

Who’ll be the judge?

Dr Paul Lewandowski BSc(Hons) PhD RNutr
Paul is passionate about the importance of a healthy diet to promote a healthy lifestyle, and as an expert in human nutrition, he’ll be checking the recipes to make sure they’ll help our farmers eat well and stay healthy.

Share your favourite recipes

These recipes are all about sharing your family favourites. We’re not aiming for Farmer MasterChef! It’s the everyday meals where we all struggle for ideas, and they are exactly the ones we’d love you to share.

Publishing guidelines

  • To make our recipes consistent and easy to follow we will:
  • Display the ingredients in a bulleted list
  • Use a numbered list for the ‘method’
  • Provide a section for notes and tips
  • Have descriptive first word (ie ‘Hearty stew’ becomes ‘Stew with meat and vegies’).This might seem less exciting, but on a website it means similar things group together in search results and A-Z lists, making them easier to find.
